My highest mileage so far!

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.”
Robert Frost

This week has been an amazing running week for me. I ran a total of 58K (36 miles) and on Sunday I ran 27K (16.8 miles) my longest distance to date. I felt in control and I'm extremely pleased with my average pace (7:05/km or 11:35/mile). Here's how it went...

The first 8K were done on the bike trail near my home and on the way back, we saw what looked to be close to 100 hot air balloons in the sky over the field to our left. It was magical! Unfortunately, I didn't have the camera, but when we got back to our place, there was one of them landing nearby and Uber H went and got a picture.
One of many!

What a great way to start my longest run to date...UberH left me at this point and off I went, back around the neighborhood and then down by the river, which is a slight downhill and such fun (although of course you realise that means when I'm on the home stretch, I'm going uphill, which makes me feel strong)...then it's the long way towards the Fort before heading for a neighboring town and back. Now a few points from this long run:
  • It's great that there are lots of water spots in the summer.
  • I wore my ice necklace - it was very humid.
  • There were thunderstorm warnings, but the weather stayed beautiful.
  • I took three gels and three ediscs (lemon flavored salt tablets)
  • I started off nice and slow, but then my pace increased and stabilized, it felt comfortable.
  • I ran using a 5/1 ratio and it felt perfect for me.
  • I got some blisters on both feet.
  • I think I need a second pair of shoes a 1/2 size bigger for long runs. My Mizuno's are actually already a 1/2 size bigger than I normally get, but I have a feeling they're made small.
  • Lots of chafing under my breasts and under the shoulder strap (sorry if that's TMI men), this has been happening on all my long runs with my Juno bra. I love it, but I'm not sure it's working for me on these long runs.
  • I felt occasional tightness under my right arch, nothing major. Today prevention with a tennis ball and ice.
Overall, I'm really pleased and hope that the next long one goes just as well, without the blisters and chafing :)

Have a great week everyone!
Cheers!

What works really well for me when I get tight arches is stepping on (while seated)a 500ml frozen water bottle and rolling it vertically up and down my foot. You get the ice and massage at the same time so saves a bit of time.:)

Glad you're having a great time with your runs and thanks for the info on the clipe. I may have to invest in one as I've just about had it with my earbud wires.

Congrats on a great week of running!

Hot air balloons always look so magnificent. Every year in Canberra there's a festival where ballooners come from all over Australia. It's an amazing sight over the lake.

I've been having the same problem with even my good bra. Time for me to take the Body Glide back out.

The children's home where I used to work had a huge balloon rally each year. Since we lived near the facility, sometimes the balloons would land in our apt complex. Very cool for my little boys (and me :D).

You're rocking these long runs! Hopefully this is the time all your patience pays off and you get to run your marathon as planned!

Awesome job! I suffered some serious chaffing this past Sunday....time to stock up on BodyGlide for me.

You are running so well Anne!
Mizunos definitely run small.
Sorry about the chafing. Become one w/the bra--nice and tight so nothing moves!

Awesome run/post! Sounds great (minus the chaffing)! Love the pics.

Yeah to the long distance! Awesome! The hot air balloons must have been awesome.

I chafe all the time above my breast and under the bra line. I have found nothing that works. If you do let me know.

wow, I can't wait to be able to say that I can run that kind of distance!

Hope you had a great summer...

Make it a great day!!

You are doing GREAT! Congrats on the weekly mileage & long run!

I always rub Body Glide along my bra lines/straps for long runs.

I get the bra line chafing, too, when I do longer distances and the only thing that seems to help is to use vaseline or bodyglide before I go out. The problem is, I usually forget to do it until it is too late and I am well into my run!

You don't think men can't have bra chafing problems:

I love love love hot air balloons!!!

Congrats on the high mileage and PDR! What an awesome week :)

I chaged big time when I used the Moving Comfort bras, particularily Juno. I have switched the Champion C9 ones and use vaseline and that sometimes helps. But I defintely have scars there.

Sounds like a great run! I second the rolling your foot on a frozen water bottle. Works great.

Wow - what a great week of running! you must be super proud of yourself! I am running a 1/2 marathon this weekend. Weather should be good - just hoping that I can make it. I haven't been running a lot, due to my piriformis and hamstring issues - but know that my biking / cross training will help me survive over 2 hours of running.

You're so inspiring for a newbie like me :-)

I have Mizunos as well. I get bloody blisters on the middle toes and I just ordered a new pair one full size bigger. I wear the Insprire 7. I tried them for 10 miles and it was great. the ones I have in my reg size do fit me..they are not smaller than my Nike but I think for running I need the bigger ones from now on.

Sounds like an awesome run - nice work!

I've been racing in a pair of montrails that are a half size bigger than my non-running shoes, but they're still not quite big enough. I was getting frustrated with them recently (I was too stubborn to admit defeat and spent an entire season in them) and saw online that they tend to run a half-size small. Why do shoe companies do that???

Congrats on the distance PR!

For that arch - I like to keep a frozen water bottle around and pull it out to roll it under my feet while reading, at the computer, etc. Works well!

Well done Anne! This is really exciting. Great long run! "Started off low and easy"...that's the key and one of the main reasons you were successful. No worries, I've run 100 milers with girls I don't know and they will ask me to apply Vaseline on parts of their bodies that were chafing that I'm not mentioning here. All natural in the long distance world.:) Keep it going, I'm very proud of you!

Yay on the distance PR! I also hit a similar distance for the first time earlier this week and it's a great feeling, huh?

Nice job! What's an ice necklace?

You're so amazing! At 52, you're still active and you still have a healthy body. Running is really helpful in keeping our bodies healthy.

Great job on your longest run ever! I had to go a full size bigger with my shoes when I started marathon training. Also try experimenting with socks. I used to get blisters until i found a pair that worked for me. Good job working on figuring out all of the little details that make running long more enjoyable. Yea!
